How to Successfully Work with IT Consulting Firms

By Sharon Borde

Candidates seeking to work with IT consulting firms and/or staffing companies are often confused by exactly what they do, and by how they represent candidates who are seeking employment in the Information Technology (IT) industry. Here are a few tips about how you may, “help us, help you" in your job search! (Continued>>)

 1) Your resume should detail your past roles and highlight your technical skills as they relate to your desired career objective.

2) State clearly your career objectives and goals when meeting with representatives, if you can. It’s best to explain to the consulting firm what you view as your "ideal" role so that we may help you find the perfect fit.

3) Have a salary RANGE in mind with a willingness to be flexible when considering opportunities. You do not want your resume to be discounted over a few dollars and cents; and you may want to be open to learning more about the company and position before turning it down based on money. It just may be your opportunity to break into some cool, new technologies you’ve always wanted experience with!

4) Provide references who can speak about your technical abilities as well as your personal attributes.

5) Be specific about your geographic preferences and do not commit to a geographic location unless you are serious about the area and/or commute.

6) Share with your representative who you are currently sending your resume to and/or interviewing with in order to avoid having your resume "double submitted" into prospective client companies. This could cause big problems.

7) Touch base often to update your representative about your progress towards finding a position for yourself, and try to be as available as possible for interviews your firm sets up.

8) Be willing to write an addendum (short intro paragraph) to your resume that speaks directly about your experience as it relates to an opportunity you’re being submitted to. You are the person most familiar with your skills, so don't be shy!

9) Remember that it is perfectly acceptable to tell your representative that you are not interested in a particular opportunity if it doesn't meet your needs or interest you. A good firm will not discourage this.

10) Take advantage of working with IT firms, as they often fill positions that are not widely advertised! Most IT firms are well connected within their respective markets!

Good summary, Sharon! Only thing I would add is don't hesitate to ask to talk to other consultants working for the company to get their perspective on the company and their employment experience. If they won't let you talk to their employees, run away!
