My son started college last week and I am amazed by the level of technology being utilized! All of his instructors download their classroom notes to an, "on-line Blackboard" so that students can focus in class on the actual lecture, rather than taking notes by hand. What a difference this is from when I went to college in the early '80's. Classroom notes were worth quite a bit of $$$ back then, and those of us who took copious notes made quite a good living by selling them to students who either were absent from class or who had a difficult time keeping up in class. (Just kidding, I always gave my notes away.) <continued>
Current students are also able to email their instructors for, "on-line" tutoring sessions, and they have access to on-line tutorial libraries! Some courses are even taught via video conference in theatre like settings, including individual headsets. I guess it's been a long time since I've attended college. My son commented the other day that he finally LOVES school and that he thinks he will even go on to pursue a Master's degree after completing his Bachelor's degree because of all the accessibility that technology is providing for him as a student.

Technology in the form of social media also helps students stay connected to family and friends, which can reduce the feelings of isolation and homesickness. My daughter has been posting pictures and comments on what's happening on her Facebook profile, so we can stay in touch and don't feel like we have to wait weeks for contact on visits. Its really fun to see what she is going through (which I'm sure is edited for parental content!) and it makes her feel like she is still part of things at home.
